Chief Wabasha lll participated in the Dakota Conflict of 1862, but he was the first to seek a peace settlement. He left Little Crow's camp and protected 269 whites and mixed-bloods in his new camp. He released them to General Sibley, and the camp became known as "Camp Release." He spent his final years grieving over the loss of land and traditional culture suffered by the Dakota people. Wabasha is one of the best known of the Sioux chiefs in Minnesota. His descendent, Chief Wabasha Vll, has visited with the artist and approved this sculpture and its likeness to Wabasha lll.
